In homage to the poet and playwright of the second half of the 16th century, built in 1888 by the architect Tomás Augusto Soler under the Italian influence of the São Carlos Theatre in Lisbon, the building, beautifully decorated and with a capacity of 360 seats, hosts some of the island's great shows and galas. For a more intimate gauge, the municipality of Funchal has a venue, three times smaller, on the northern heights, the Cine-Teatro Municipal de Santo António.
