SAINT HELENA BASILICA

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

Baroque inspiration, embellished with numerous frills, the basilica, dated 1727 and attributed to Domenico Cachia, was the fourth parish of the island. Although not visited by tourists, it does not lack interest. The interior, white and golden, includes niches along the nave. The floor is sober, grey and white marble, and the ceiling is covered with frescos. A window houses the wooden statue of St. Helena, dressed in a blue and gold dress, and made in 1837 by Salvatore Psaila. This statue, which is wandering in the city during a festive season, was financed by the Borg knight, a Maltese patriot, a fierce opponent of the French. The steeple of the basilica houses 7 bells, one of which is more than 800 kg. Leaving St. Helena, you see the dome of the Tal-Herba church.
