With Balzan and Santa Venera on its outskirts, but also Naxxar and Mosta, Birkirkara is the most populated basin of the island. The town itself is the largest on the island (over 24,000 inhabitants) as many Maltese working in Valletta chose it as their residence and it became its suburb. There is a lively modern city life where pizzerias and fast food restaurants rub shoulders. There are, however, no hotels and very few restaurants. It is however an old city which keeps for our happiness several interesting buildings. The market of Birkirkara is held on Fridays and Wednesdays in Place Sainte-Hélène.
