The polygonal fort was built by the British between 1910 and 1912 and is situated on high ground opposite Benghisa Point. It is the southernmost fortification in Malta and was part of a chain of fortifications designed to protect Marsaxlokk Harbour, along with Fort Delimara and Fort Tas-Sil at Delimera Point (protecting the northern part of the bay), Fort San Lucian at Kbira Point and the Ferretti Batteries (protecting the shoreline). It is now a private property and can only be seen from the outside.
