Archaeology handicrafts and science and technology sites to visit Zurrieq

The remains of Roman towers are part of a vast "warning plan" put in place at the time. They were probably built to warn of Heruli attacks from the Black Sea in the ^3rd century. In the event of an imminent attack, the alarm would be sounded from tower to tower all the way to Mdina, the capital at the time (under the name of Melita).

Further towers were built in the ^17th century for the same purpose. Only the aggressor had changed. Zurrieq, like the surrounding villages, served as a lookout and the first defensive post on the southern coast.
