APHENDRIKA CHURCHES

This poorly maintained archaeological site (Aphendrika, Αφέντρικα Παναγία/Aphendrika Panagia) groups together three ruined Byzantine basilicas built and rebuilt between the ^6th and ^16th centuries. They stand on the site of Ourania/Ουρανία, a city "of heaven" founded in the ^2nd century BC, renamed Aphendrika and destroyed during an Ottoman raid in 1363. In addition to the churches of Agios Georgios (^10th century), Panagia Chrysiotissa (^6th century) and Agios Asomatos (^6th century), the foundations of a dozen medieval houses are visible.
