PANAGIA KANAKARIA MONASTERY

This Greek Orthodox monastery (Panagia Kanakaria Manastırı, Μονή Παναγίας Κανακαριάς/Moni Panagias Kanakarias) was founded in the^5th century and remodeled until the ^18th century. The church houses a precious ^6th-century mosaic, one of the very few representations of the Virgin to have survived the iconoclastic movement of the ^8th and ^9th centuries. The Virgin can still be seen here. But the rest of the mosaic was looted in 1979 and saved by Nicosia's Byzantine Museum in 1991.
