Paphos' main mosque, in the upper town. Formerly a Catholic church, converted into a mosque in the century.
This elegant mosque (Τζαμί Κεπήρ/Tzami Kebir, Cami-i Kebir), whose name means "great" in Arabic, is a former 12th-century Catholic church dedicated to Saint Sophia. It was converted into a mosque between 1584 and 1592 by Governor Mehmet Bey Ebubekir. Dominating the former Turkish Cypriot quarter of Mouttalos with its 40 m-high minaret, it was spared the violence of 1974. Since then, however, it has remained closed to worship. It is also known as Cami Büyük ("great mosque" in Turkish), Mouttalos, Ebubekir or Agia Sofia.
