Petit Futé's opinion on MILFORD SOUND

It's perhaps the most famous natural spot of the South Island, the one that everyone talks about and whose photos go to hostels and return to vacation. On New Zealand, Tongariro is perhaps the only comparable site. It must be said that there is what. It is a beauty setting with infinite charm. If you can, do not come in full season, cars will be numerous and cruises are taken. In winter there is a lot less world, snow adds to magic, but attention, access can very well be closed because of the weather… The road from Te Anau is an attraction in itself. It takes about 120 kilometres and two good hours, or even more with breaks. Because there are a lot of things to see about doing, lookouts, valleys, lakes, endless mountains… In amount north, Mirror Lakes can already be an interesting photo step, with their sparkling surface reflecting summits. The view from the Lake Gunn point is even more amazing and romantic by its grandeur. With some time, go to the Holyford Valley towards Gunns Camp to see the little Lake Marian waterfalls, after a short walk, and the impressive Humboldt Falls, 275 metres high (20-30 minutes round back). Then the Hommer Tunnel, completed in 1953 and at 945 metres above sea level. At the exit, the panorama is stunning, and gradually go down to the sea level to reach the Sound. Before arriving at the Destination, The Chasm can stand for its waterfalls and rock formations (10-20 minutes round round). Once on the banks, the pulchritude of the places takes its full meaning. There is a parking lot and a building where boats leave. It is here that we will have to embark on cruises. With a little luck, dolphins and lions cross your road. The waterfalls are also very beautiful and the mountains plunging into water with their quirky shapes impose respect.
