The château was built between 1871 and 1874 by businessman and politician William Larnach for his first wife, Eliza Jane Guise. Over 200 men worked on its construction, and a further twelve years were needed to fit out the interior. Since 1967, it has been owned and lovingly restored by the Barker family. One of the country's few castles, it is one of New Zealand's top attractions. You can visit the castle and its gardens, eat there, stay there, take part in the winter ball or organize various events.
