Open since 1995, this fascinating center offers you the chance to learn more about the local wildlife and, in particular, the brown kiwi. The National Kiwi Centre takes them in and raises them until they are 5 years old, before releasing them back into the North Island bush . Other surprises include turtles, tuataras and crayfish, which you can fish for, as well as hundred-year-old eels up to two meters long! Don't miss the eel meal followed by kiwis at 10 a.m., 12 p.m. and 3 p.m.! There's also a store.
