An institution for one hundred and sixty years (since 1863 to be exact), Carlton has established itself as a Christchurch night spot with live music every night. Its new post-earthquake space is very modern and there's a nice terrace upstairs to enjoy the sun on sunny days. In addition to being a trendy bar, it's also a steakhouse serving grilled meats and fine contemporary New Zealand cuisine. The place is very popular and often crowded, so remember to make reservations or come early.
