NELSON PROVINCIAL MUSEUM
Nelson Provincial Museum is New Zealand's oldest museum. Its foundations date back to May 1841, when it housed the Nelson Literary and Scientific Institute. It traces local history, and more specifically that of the Maoris and early settlers. Each showcase presents the inhabitants and their history through period objects and photographs. The second floor houses temporary exhibitions. The Nelson Pupuri Taonga o Te Tai Ao Provincial Museum is the kaitiaki (Maori for guardian) of taonga history (i.e. regional culture).
