Monolithic church with bees that produce honey considered sacred and praised for its healing properties.
Carved out of the hillside in the 6th century during the rule of King Kaleb, the monolithic church features a wide façade decorated with a frieze of arches. As bees have taken up residence in the building, the honey they produce is considered sacred and praised for its curative virtues (notably for skin diseases). This belief, common whenever a swarm is found in the vicinity of a church, is linked to the legend of the birth of King Lalibela.
