The only spa town in Lithuania, Birštonas is located in the Niemen Loops Regional Park. Already a summer resort for the Grand Dukes of Lithuania and the local nobility, who came here to hunt as early as the 14th century, it was during the second half of the 19th century that spa activities (thermal water, mud baths) began to make a name for themselves. It was granted spa town status in 1846, but it was under Soviet occupation that it developed. Surrounded by forests, this charming town is a pleasant place to stop for a breath of fresh air and a rest.
