Rēzekne, the capital of Latgale, was built around a castle of the Livonian order in 1285, amid seven hills, on the banks of the Rēzekne river and Lake Kovsa. In the 17th century, the town became Polish and was renamed Rzežyca. In 1772, it became Russian following the partition of Poland. In 1863, it was linked to St. Petersburg by rail, and the economy flourished. In 1917, the first independence movements began in Rēzekne. The city suffered greatly from the bombings of the Second World War, and most of its historic buildings were wiped out. It was rebuilt under Soviet rule as an industrial center.
