Magnificent museum with an impressive collection of objects, sculptures and ceramics
It is a magnificent museum located 500 m from the archaeological park which has just reopened in 2020 after extensive renovation work. Now the artifacts are beautifully displayed. Inaugurated in 1988, the museum replaced the one that was once in Ortygia. Highly didactic and remarkably organized, it covers a period from prehistory to Greek colonization in 3 distinct sections: Sicilian prehistory, the region of Syracuse and the rest of Sicily. The collection of objects, sculptures and ceramics is impressive. Among the most important pieces are a marble cornice with a winged gorgonian from the temple of Athena in Syracuse, the statue of a marble kouros from the 6th century BC, a collection of vases from Camarina and Gela, bronze material from the 8th century BC.
