SCALA DEI TURCHI
One of the 7 wonders of Sicily with white chalk cliffs.
One of the seven wonders of Sicily! You won't be the only one to discover the site, unless you come very early or at the end of the day, without the horde of tourists, especially in summer. It is a geological feature of great beauty. Here, the sea and erosion have laminated the chalk cliffs into a bright white staircase. The contrast between the turquoise of the sea and the whiteness of the rock is striking. It's a real paradise, as the locals say, who regularly go there for family picnics or mud mask sessions that can be found on site. For the record, its name dates back to the Saracen pirates they called the Turks (but who were actually Arabs). They had found here a shelter from the wind and a boarding place.
To get there, you have to go down the stairs of the Lido restaurant that will take you to the beach. Don't venture down other paths, you could suddenly find yourself perched a hundred meters high on the sea. For a swim, the more adventurous can climb the Scala dei Turchi and go back down to the other side, because the beautiful sandy beach you arrive at is lined with rocks that make swimming difficult. But beware, it's slippery!
Clever tip: another small beach 10 minutes away from this one also has chalk cliffs, but it is much less frequented by tourists : Punta Bianca. The access by car is rather tortuous but it is just as beautiful and much quieter.
