CELLAR DI CUSA

This site is located 12 km from Mazara del Vallo. It was in the Cusa quarry that the engineers of the ancient city extracted the limestone tufa for the construction of large capitals and columns of the Selinunte temples. This quarry looks like an abandoned building site. It was probably the arrival of Hannibal's troops that caused this final flight. Soon after, Selinunte, the richest city in Sicily, fell back on its destroyed power. The city was no longer able to carry out its grandiose construction program.
