Bronze bull weighing 3.2 tons, 3.4 m high and 4.9 m long, a symbol of hope and fighting spirit for the American people

Installed not far from Bowling Green, in the heart of the Financial District, this bronze bull - 3.2 tons, 3.4 meters high and 4.9 meters long - whose position suggests that the animal is about to charge, is the work of the artist Arturo Di Modica. It was Di Modica himself who came to place the sculpture in front of the New York Stock Exchange in mid-December 1989, as a Christmas present to the citizens of New York, but also as a symbol of hope and fighting spirit for the American people as a whole, two years after the stock market crash of 1987. The bull was immediately seized by the authorities before finally being installed in its current location. Since then, the Charging Bull has never ceased to seduce New Yorkers and visitors alike (touching its snout, horns and testicles is said to bring wealth), as much as it has given rise to numerous misappropriations. In recent years, the Charging Bull has become a favorite place for marketing stunts: after Fearless Girl, a bronze statue installed without permission in 2017 to highlight the differences in treatment between men and women (a statue that has since found its place in front of the New York Stock Exchange), it's Harambe, a 2-meter bronze statue representing a gorilla, which was illegally placed in front of the Wall Street bull by the agency Sapien.Network in late 2021, in order to denounce the inequality of wealth. To mark the occasion, the agency placed 10,000 bananas at the foot of the statue, before donating them to a food bank.

Charging Bull
