Protected historic building in Manhattan that became a theater and then an immigrant reception center
Strange destiny for this historic building recognizable by its walls of large reddish brown stones. Its appearance is not engaging, but its past deserves attention: it was first a stronghold built in 1812 in the event of an English attack, then a theatre, before becoming the reception centre for immigrants between 1855 and 1889, before Ellis Island. From 1896, it was the New York Aquarium. And today, this is where we buy tickets for Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. The monument has been protected since 1966.

A voir.
