Building of 290 m in the very Art Deco style with luxury apartments with terrace, the most expensive in Manhattan
Formerly called the American International Building, this 290-meter skyscraper dates back to 1932, when the city was engaged in a race for the tallest tower, as it has been for the past five years. In a very Art Deco style reminiscent of the Empire State Building, except for its top floors which borrow from Gothic art, the building is now the eighteenth tallest in the city and the 33rd in the United States. The building once attracted tourists for its two-story elevators and its observatory open to the public on the 66th floor, which is now closed. Since 2015 it has housed luxury housing, after long being occupied by an insurance company. Prices vary widely, US$3,400 for a studio on floors 6 to 10 and up to US$20,000 for the highest floors. The large apartments on the very top floors are some of the most expensive rental units in the city. From the 55th floor upwards, where five-bedroom penthouses with private terraces can be rented, prices rise considerably. Lucky apartment renters can take advantage of renovations that took place in 2015, which now give them private access to a bowling alley, a supermarket, a pool hall and a children's playroom. Since 2017, a rooftop bar and restaurant (Saga) has opened to the public. If you can't make it up to the upper floors, you can definitely enter the lobby, which houses a coffee shop.
