Library in Manhattan with a bronze sculpture of the Greek goddess Anthena as a symbol of knowledge
The Low Memorial Library is one of the only buildings to which visitors have free access. Less impressive than the Butler Library, it is nevertheless remarkable, with its ten columns reminiscent of the Pantheon and its stairs on which students like to gather. In front of the library stands Alma Mater, a bronze sculpture created by Daniel Chester French in 1901. Now the emblem of Columbia, it represents the Greek goddess Athena, whose draped clothes conceal an owl, a symbol of knowledge.
