In the Metropolitan shadow, housed in the David H. Koch Theater (ex-New York State Theatre), NYCO was created in 1944 and led, once not usual, by soprano Beverly Sills for a decade, until 1988. Prices are lower than at the Metropolitan, the architecture more interesting than that of its crushing neighbor, subtitles (English) allow to follow the plot, singers are mostly American and productions, apart from the classics, include operettas and creations. It is possible to go backstage in the largest opera concerts in the city from September to May.
