Good value hotel, close to Central Terminal Station and the Empire State Building.
The hotel has the advantage of being just a few blocks away from Grand Central Terminal, the Empire State building and shops on 5 th Avenue. The rooms are small and rather summary. The hotel is located in a relatively quiet block. Unlike some establishments, the rooms of the Grand Union are equipped with air conditioning and central heating. A real plus if you stay in July-August or December to February. The hotel lodges the New York Marathon runners in November and rarely has rooms available at this time.

AVOID this hotel. The first day the reception ask my credit card for 100 dollars for the garantie that was supposed to be reimbursed after our departure. Instead, they charged me two times 200 dollars and reimbursed me 100 dollars. I wrote them but no answer from them. Your credit card information is not safe in this hotel. Avoid avoid avoid….

Lovely hotel and in great NY location near the Korea town and many of the high end furniture shops, rug stores. Hotel breakfast area has a great server name Jacob who will help you with breakfast and coffee. Hotel offers very quick services when requested. Hallway has little musky smell coming from very old carpet. Hotel is well built and super quiet. We stayed in suites for three days.

Stayed at HGU for a week over Christmas with my partner. Reception is open 24 hours which was super convenient as we arrived after midnight. There was a $100 deposit taken from our card which reduced our spending money that we weren’t expecting but was returned to our card within 48 hours of checking out. We stayed in a Deluxe Queen Room which was small but manageable considering how little we were in there. From our window we could peak a view of the Empire State Building a couple blocks away. Heating controls were in the room which was really useful coming from an Australian summer into NYC winter. Shower temp wasn’t overly hot and could be temperamental which was a negative for us as we like really warm showers. Reception staff were lovely and some were great at giving directions and helpful information (specifically the night male staff). Hotel is right next to a metro and short walking distance to attractions. Would definitely stay again.

It's a historic gem of a hotel that is close to all attractions in the heart of NYC. Be sure to check out the old Iron stair case. Roof top, bar and restaurant with views of the Empire State Building.
