Pricy but worth it

Nice location with redesigned dorm rooms from the Arts University back in the day. Great service and free water bottles in the lobby. The building is from the 1920s and has a ton of character. There is a rooftop bar with music at night and great views of the city. Private bathrooms and the rooms were quiet and clean. Definitely would stay again for the location and vibe.

We stayed on the 3rd floor - our room was vibrating and pumping with music from the club above all night. On top of it they started jack hammering at 6 am on the street. Another turn off was the hand prints on the walls above the bed. The location was great for our show but will not return because of the noise problem .

We had a blast. Bunk beds are great for a family of 4. Hotel is perfectly located with access to everything. Smile to go is super affordable, delicious and cool for breakfast and lunch. If you go to the Broken Shaker rooftop bar say hi to Diego and Brandy for us they're amazing.

If your room is on 3rd floor, the experience could be really awful. The noise from the club(?) is so loud, and you can even feel the floor is vibrating.

Bugs in the bed beware! I was told a manager would contact me after they switch my room but did not receive a call.

My room was smaller than on the picture. It's my impression. Should be 15 m².

No kettle or trash bin in the room.

The staff was nice.

Great location.

If I could, I would give it 4.5 stars. It is a great hotel in a convenient spot, and the rooms are great; you have to realize this is a NYC hotel, not a hotel in Orlando, to all the people complaining about the size of the rooms. Has excellent dining and entertainment options in the hotel. Great for young couples looking for a quick weekend getaway. The staff is wonderful, and the property is showing minor wear, but overall, it is great. The only other complaint is that the jackhammer was running nonstop for two days we were here, but that's NYC, not on the hotel. It would have been nice for the hotel maybe to give us a warning...if they were even given a warning.

I really liked this hotel - the price was under $300/night. The room was very clean and a good size (small but that is expected in NYC). The staff was very friendly and there are free water bottles! They have a rrstaurant and rooftop bar, I didn't try but asked the restaurant for silverware once and they were very nice. The location seems very safe and close to shopping, bars and restaurants.
The only reason I docked 1 star is because the window (at least in my room) was not sound proof (actually was sealed with duct tape around the edges). As NYC is very noisy, it was difficult to sleep and I absolutely had to wear noise cancelling headphones and an eye mask in order to sleep. Around 9:30pm on my last night, the fire alarm went off for about 2 hours because some one had lit a fire in their room and took the fire department a while to turn it off.
Other than that, this hotel was great!

There is a person so rude at the front desk, he does not deserve his job.

Really loud location, no AC, almost concerningly aggressive staff and ended up switching to another hotel at midnight.

The request for some ac was put in at 3 pm, arrived home at 10 pm not fixed. Then the engineer wasn’t in so couldn’t. Then waited for the engineer and he couldn’t fix… Opening the windows on 23rd (with the construction) was the only option provided. But then the windows were screwed shut and duck taped per picture? (Not 4 star vibes but people know what they’re getting into when they stay at the freehand)

I think the big thing though was Omar, the front desk manager. It’s always tough to tell in these reviews if the reviewer is / was an a hole. Even Assuming the worst of me… Omar was making derogatory remarks and telling me to switch hotels within 2 minutes of our interaction! I thought it could escalate into something physical within 3! I’ve reflected on this because it was so bizarre and I live in hotels basically and have never had an interaction like this. The BEST case is Omar is not a fit for the job. The WORST case is that there are explicit instructions to go on the offensive if something goes wrong. My gut is honestly the latter… it’s a hostel with 4 star prices and probably only so many levers to actually address things; so this is an option…

Finally there is construction on 23rd likely through summer. Not freehands fault but to the hostel point it’s single pane glass (with duck tape). Can still work if you’re a very heavy sleeper.

I had to hastily book this hotel due to an emergency, and unfortunately, the experience left much to be desired. The building itself appears to be on the verge of collapse, with old elevators, doors sporting faulty locks, and thin walls that allow every sound to permeate. The constant noise from rowdy individuals in the hallways only heightened the sense of unease.

Feeling unsafe, I took measures to fortify the room, including moving a creaky wooden desk to block the door. The bathrooms were uncomfortably small, and for the steep price of $300, the accommodation felt grossly inadequate and unsafe. Sleeping was a challenge, with the need to keep the light on and fully clothed due to the subpar quality of the sheets.

Overall, I cannot in good conscience recommend this hotel to anyone seeking a safe and comfortable stay. Feels like your roadside Inn.

This hotel is AWFUL for what you pay. We paid quite a lot of money for the tiniest hotel room in NYC. We had friends who were staying in cheaper hotels, that had worse reviews that had much bigger rooms.

Our bed literally touched 3 walls, if you have 2 people in there it feels like you're in a prison cell. The bathroom sink is so small you can barely fit your two hands in there. On top of all that, be ready to pay $35 a day in facility fees for your stay, on top of an already pricey room.

Do yourself the favor, stay somewhere else. This place only has good reviews because it has a nice bar, the actual room experience is so miserable you'll be trying to avoid it the entire time.

Massive rip off, doesn't deserve the 4 stars.

It was a nice stay in NYC. The room we booked was really expensive but was the tiniest hotel room I've ever stayed in. It felt like a single college dorm room. The restaurants and bars were cute, rather expensive. Overall glad we had an experience here in New York but I probably should've checked the size of the room more closely before booking. Staff was lovely though.

Great place to go if you want to be overcharged for a small, dirty room with no air conditioning. Loud throughout the night because of the club they have and rude front desk that was dismissive and belittling. You’d be better off staying at a motel 6.

I've stayed here a few times and really love it. I adore the minimal rooms with their handpainted accents and ceramic light fixtures. The service is just fine, but if you're expecting the traditional hotel service, you may be bummed. This is more like a group of friendly art-punks took over a giant hotel and are playing house (but in a good way). Rooftop bar and attached restaurant, Comodo are tops. Easily walkable and great morning coffee is close by (skip the neighboring coffee/breakfast spot in favor of something more real).

Incredible vibes for visitors but Omar sucks!

Super Noisy!!! The extremely loud bass from the bar downstairs continues until as late as 3:30 AM, and the poor soundproofing window makes the situation worse, given that the hotel is located at the busiest intersection on the avenue. Prepare to be overwhelmed by various types of noise. It's almost guaranteed that you won't get a good night's sleep at this hotel. The front desk was extremely unhelpful and unwilling to move us to higher floors despite the consecutive nights disturbed by bass noise from the bar. BTW hairdryer keeps breaking down...

Excellent Location! Walking distance to Union Square, multiple subway stations, great quick food options, yoga studios, and Flatiron Bathhouse!

The hotel itself has two fantastic restaurants. Great breakfast and coffee. Staff was extremely helpful. This is my go to for LA & NYC!

The room was small, smelly, and dusty. There was dust pilled up in the corners and all over the windowsill. It looked like it hadn’t been deep cleaned in months. The AC didn’t work in our room and the bathroom tile was bubbling off the wall. Location was good.

Rooms are old (think college dorm) and the front desk is not the friendliest but it’s a great location

The hotel room is def not worth more than what I paid for it. I was lucky enough to get it for $135 because I booked early, and it was off-season. The room is very much tight but had all the amenities needed. Wasn't the cleanliest. Stains on the black carpet that were white, the side table had splatter, mold in the small shower. One half roll of toilet paper that was out by morning and no extra rolls in the room. I'm a New Yorker born and raised so I'm use to sleep in the most noisy conditions HOWEVER the noise everyone else is talking about is 100% accurate (this site wont allow me to post the video of the noise). My room window faced four other building walls, which made the ac units obnoxiously loud. The enclosed space acted like an echo for all the unit's running at once. I kept waking up from my sleep because it sounds like a tornado was heading our way. The thermostat has a little green light to indicate it's on, but in pitch black, it acted like a nightlight and annoyed me enough to turn off the unit and freeze the rest of the night. The night staff weren't friendly at check-in, but the am was better. I stood here instead of driving to CT because I had appts that ran late and I was afraid I would fall asleep on the road. I would have rather crashed on my way home than stayed here again.

Stayed here last week with my partner and we both loved this hotel.Tidy rooms with really comfortable bed. Cleaners were lovely women who came round regularly and even if you didn’t want the room cleaned they still offered towels, toilet paper etc. A brilliant experience 10/10
