I really enjoyed staying at the Harlem Flophouse. It was just as Rene described it and was true to the images on the website. The room was spacious and had a warm cosy feeling to it with. The bed was comfy and there were warm blankets. It is a simple, no fuss home with bare bones services. The house is full of character and interesting artworks, books and furnishings. Rene was super helpful and responsive in the lead up to my stay and once I arrived he helped me with my luggage and filled me in on the local restaurants and cafes plus attractions. Loved the little touches like the radio playing jazz and the antique books. The bathroom was authentic with claw foot bath and original tiling. Great location within walking distance to Central Park, Apollo Theatre and transportation. I will stay again!

Sehr kleines gemütliches Hotel in Central Harlem.

I stayed here while visiting my son. The location and cost were perfect! The home is beautiful. The room was clean and comfortable. It is a no frills establishment which was just fine. It was so quiet and peaceful. I honestly did not bump into other guests or the owners. Checkin was easy. My only issue was with the deep clawfoot shower/tub as a short person. Would definitely recommend.

The Harlem Flophouse is a very funky 1880s house that has been a flophouse since 1917. The inside is quite beautiful, with loads of architectural details including bordered hardwood floors. The rooms are quite large, though the beds are only full, so sleeping may be bit cozier than what you are used to. Bathrooms are shared, one for each of the two rooms on each of the floors. During our stay, there was only one other couple in the house and we never saw them, so the bathroom was essentially private. There is a basin in each of the rooms, so you can brush your teeth, etc. in your room.
We arrived on a very cold winter day and were greeted at the door by our host, Rene. We asked if he had anything warm to drink available and he immediately popped down to his basement quarters and returned with an electric kettle, mugs and a big box of tea bags that we used throughout our stay.
The location couldn’t have been better for us, just a 3 block walk from the friends we had come up to visit. But it’s very convenient for anyone visiting NYC--2 blocks to the A-B-C-D subway lines as well as a number of bus routes that go across 125th street to the 6 subway line, and one of which turns onto Lexington Avenue and goes all the way down the east side.
If you’re hungry, we suggest takeout from Charles Pan Fried Chicken at their 125th Street location. They were featured in the Netflix documentary “High on the Hog” and have excellent Fried Chicken, sides (black eyed peas are awesome) and cornbread at very reasonable prices.
Just two regrets: we didn’t get to meet Rene’s cat and, because we were at an Anniversary party for our friends, we didn’t get to attend the regular concert he frequently hosts on the first floor of the house.
And did I mention, the Flophouse costs only $125 per night, far less expensive than almost any hotel in Manhattan. We’ll be back.

Hidden Heaven for psychedelic music lovers!!!

First time Visited this place for a blues experience and it was literally discovery for me…

I’m totally impressed with the host, the brilliant musician Rene Calvo and the band. These guys make what they really love, not what is the most popular and very well sold… This place is the Hidden Heaven for blues / psychedelic music lovers…

Highly recommend, go and enjoy Pure Music of Rene Calvo #Strawberry mouth #The Goddess Lakshmi.

P.S. found their youtube chanels: #Rene Calvo and #The Goddess Lakshmi.
Unique!!! True music!!!

My go-to place in NYC. Extremely reasonable and very comfortable, this place is like stepping back in time. Beautifully appointed bedrooms with antique touches. You share a bathroom with one other room; bedrooms have private sinks. Easy access to subway and plenty of shops/cafes nearby.

The room was great! The bedding was comfortable, plush, and warm. The water pressure was great, which is a rarity in NYC. The host was kind and attentive. I only took 1 star off of service because we didn't need any so I can't really attest to it. We will definitely be returning again.

We stayed here back at the start of October and had an amazing stay. The rooms are clean and full of character, the owner is incredibly friendly and helpful, and if you’re lucky there will be live jazz on downstairs. The location is amazing as you’re only a few minutes from the metro and the price is about as good as it gets in Manhattan!

Absolutely wonderful experience. We stayed here recently and couldn’t have been more pleased. Rene was great and very accommodating, the building was gorgeous, the neighborhood was lovely and conveniently located by a couple subway stations that made getting around really easy… highly recommend.

Charming 100 year old building. Renée is a gracious host. Jazz musicians pianist, guitarist and drummer very talented. Steps to entrance easy for young but tough for short oldie like me. Fun time, met interesting jazz enthusiasts. Audience quite friendly and nice. Rooms for rent newly refurbished and attractive. For NYC moderately priced. Subway close. A memorable visit.

We had a great stay here at the Harlem Flophouse. Nice, large and comfortable room in a truly unique and absolutely charming house. If you are looking for something else than a regular NYC hotel room, you should try this! Although the bathrooms are shared, there was a sink in the room and with only 4 guest rooms the 2 available bathrooms were more than enough (only one shower available though).

The location is very good, in the middle of the interesting Harlem neighborhood as well as lots of restaurants/bars and the Central Park closely reachable.

The house itself is located in a very calm street and with a room facing the back we could not believe to be in the middle of NYC, it was so quiet.

René was very communicative via mail, informing us about a construction going on in the house next door and did quickly answer any questions!

Definitely would come again and recommend it.

Absolutely loved this place! The entire building was very cozy and felt like a home away from home. I would definitely recommend booking here.

The owner, René, was very kind, welcoming, and accommodating to us.

Our room was very clean and the washroom was very clean too. I believe René cleans the washrooms everyday.

Subway station was very nearby and getting to and from was very simple.

It honestly felt like my girlfriend and I had our own little romantic vacation home to ourselves. My girlfriend and I would definitely book here again if we come back to New York.

Absolute aanrader.
