Superb rooms for a stay in a historic New York hotel.
The Algonquin is a historical site: it is here that authors and journalists have gathered since 1919 to discuss the world. Renovated about ten years ago, the hotel has lost its soul but not its charm. The rooms are quite small but warm and very well decorated. One of the strangeness of the place, a cat named Matilda (or Hamlet in the case of a male) haunting the hotel's corridors. A practice that dates back to the 1930s when a cat invited itself into the hotel to the delight of its guests.

Horrible experience that doesn’t seem to end. We were overcharged for a bottle of wine that was listed as $54 and they charged us $114 (the bottle is only worth $7 by the way), when we asked that they fix they said they couldn’t and that a manager wouldn’t be in until after we left. We had to call Marriot corporate who said they would give us a refund in the next week (still waiting on that) then the front desk staff was annoyed when we called the corporate office. On top of that, it’s been 5 days and they still have not given us back the $150 smoking deposit, only $80, and neither of us smoke and we left the room in perfect condition. When we asked why they didn’t give us the full $150 they said they didn’t know and we would have to wait for a manager to call us back. Guess who never called? This is so ridiculous and 100% not worth the stay. The rooms are not up to par for the price you are paying and the carpets were so dirty I had to wear socks the entire time in the room. Do not book here!

This has become our favorite place to stay in New York, stately, dignified, well appointed and with a beautifully updated restaurant/lounge. Though just 2 blocks away, the chaos of Times Square is absent on this block of 44th Street. A new fee structure encourages you to use the restaurant which we discovered was fantastic. Staff is professional and polite and the food is excellent in preparation and presentation.

We had a corner King room (the larger king room). The bathroom was almost comically small, but the room was very clean and felt so much better than your typical, nice but bland, hotel. Very unique, will definitely stay here again.
