Opened in 1961, renovated 15 years later, the 2,738-seat David Geffen Hall is the permanent home of the New York Philharmonic, the oldest American orchestra (founded in 1842) and one of the oldest and most famous in the world. His conductors were Leonard Bernstein, Pierre Boulez, Arturo Toscanini, Dimitri Mitropoulos and Zubin Mehta... The orchestra plays 36 weeks a year (a world record) and gives free concerts in Central Park and the main parks of New York, before hundreds of thousands of listeners.
