Founded in 1248, the church became famous two centuries later, in 1430, when it was the site of a miracle - the descent of the Virgin Mary into the city of Jaén - and became a sanctuary honoring the image of the Virgin within. The late Gothic interior houses the tomb of the architect Andrés de Vandelvira, a renowned master of Renaissance architecture in Andalusia. The three façades are in different styles: Gothic for the oldest, Neoclassical for the main and Renaissance for the side.
