Although it has been closed for a long time, the coral quarry is both an ancient source of exploitation and a curiosity which testifies to the distant volcanic past of Rodrigues. Located between the airport and the place called Petit Butte, this curious and wild peninsula facing the south-western lagoon is in fact an ancient submarine plate which would have emerged from the water under the pressure of powerful tectonic tremors: a huge piece of coral in short, which the Rodriguans have used to make bricks and more recently decorative objects.
