VACUNA POND

A few kilometers south of Curepipe, the Mare aux Vacoas, named after a tree endemic to the Mascarene Islands, is the largest water reserve in the country. Contrary to popular belief, it is not a crater lake but a gigantic artificial basin created in 1888 to supply water to all the cities of the central plateau. Even if the place is not a must-see, it is a pleasant place to walk and meet Mauritian families on weekends. To the north-west of the lake, do not miss the Takamaka Winery: lychee wine cellar.
