THE MUNICIPAL THEATRE
Historic theater built on the site of the old Port-Louis market by French architect Poujade
Built on the site of the old Port-Louis market by French architect Poujade, and inaugurated in 1822 by the island's first British governor, it is one of the oldest Italian-style theaters in the Southern Hemisphere. During the 19th and 20th centuries, it hosted French-language theatrical and operatic troupes before closing in 2008. Following major renovation work, this symbol of Port-Louis' cultural past, listed as a national heritage site, is set to reopen its doors in 2025, once again making its magnificent dome resound.
