THE CITADEL OR FORT ADELAIDE
On the heights of the capital, this former 18th-century military fortress offers a beautiful panoramic view of Port Louis and its harbour
Set high up on the hillside, the citadel offers a panoramic view of Port Louis and its harbour to anyone brave enough to climb up there - it takes around 30 minutes. A former military fortress, it was built in several stages, first by the French in the 18th century, then by the English in the 19th century, who named it after the wife of William IV, King of the United Kingdom and Hanover from 1830 to 1837. Made of basalt blocks, it was designed to withstand a 3-month siege and house hundreds of soldiers. Today, it is a popular place to visit.

La vue sur Port Louis est bluffante, surtout si le temps est de la partie.
