ISTANA BUKIT SERENE
The official residence of the Sultans of Johor, the palace was completed in 1939. Its architecture is inspired by Art Deco, with a few local touches giving it a unique style. At the entrance, a monumental arch surmounted by a replica of the royal crown recalls the prestige of the dynasty. Protected by the Royal Johor Military Force, the palace stands on a hill overlooking Singapore, once a possession of the Sultanate of Johor. During the Second World War, it served as a headquarters for the Japanese in preparation for their invasion of the neighboring island.
