CULTUURTUIN

Approximately 2 km from downtown Paramaribo, Cultuurtuin(botanical garden in Dutch) was created at the end of the ^19th century by the Dutch for research into tropical flora. Gradually abandoned, the Ministry of Agriculture became involved in the restoration of the site in the 1950s, some twenty years before the zoo was set up (in 1972). Bordered by a small pond, the park attracts many species of birds, to the delight not only of experienced ornithologists, but also of the many Surinamese who come here for a jog!
