The history of this place is moving: in 1836, Anne-Marie Javouhey set up a new leprosarium on the Acarouany royal estate, with numerous carbets to care for the sick. By 1921, there were as many as 75 lepers. An emblematic site in French Guiana's history, the village of l'Acarouany is now inhabited, and is also the focus of religious tourism, with a pilgrimage organized every year. The church has been restored to remain open for worship.
