Maison Pax is Trinidad's oldest guest house, with an aroma of encaustic. Some of its 18 rooms have no private bathroom and are only cooled by fans. But it has retained an old-fashioned, cosy, very British atmosphere, scrupulously maintained by Oda and Gerard, the couple who run the place. In this venerable house, the passage of time is scrupulously regulated by simple, regular pleasures. At breakfast time, hummingbirds flutter around the feeder on the veranda.
