Inaugurated in June 2023, the Museum of Afropanamean Memory is housed in Portobelo's famous Royal Customs House. It seeks not only to tell the story of slavery in the region, but also to celebrate the cultural traditions that emerged as resistance to the colony. Portobelo was indeed an important port in the history of slavery, and the Customs House is transformed with this museum into a symbolic place of resistance and resilience. One of the highlights of the project was the active participation of the local community in the restoration of the building, which not only created jobs, but also instilled a strong sense of belonging and pride. The voice of the people of Portobelo was essential in deciding on the themes presented in the museum, which offers visitors an in-depth view of the history and heritage of the Afro-Panamanian community, from slavery to its invaluable role in the building of the country. A space that invites reflection on the cultural heritage that has shaped Panamanian identity. The exhibitions are interactive, with multimedia projections and installations that engage all our senses. Music, dance, testimonials from local residents, superb works by several local artists... The space exudes creativity, and every corner of the museum takes us on a journey of discovery of both the past and present of the Afro-Panamanian community. A must-see!
