Panamá is one of the few capitals on the continent to boast a veritable tropical forest at its heart. We go there as much for the wildlife as for the impressive view over the city. This 232-hectare protected park is Panama's green lung. It is the first part of a biological corridor between the south and north of the isthmus, guaranteeing that animals can move from the forests of the Pacific to those of the Atlantic. The forest of the Metropolitan Natural Park continues through the Camino de Cruces, Soberanía and Fort San Lorenzo national parks.
The park has two entrances, 700 m apart. At the visitor center, the main entrance, you'll find a description of the walks to be made and a few amenities. This is where the Los Momótides (900 m, 45 minutes), Los Caobos (900 m, 1 hour) and El Roble (700 m, 30 minutes) trails start. The other entrance is at the guard hut, from where La Cienaguita (1.1 km, 1 hour) and Mono Tití (1.1 km, 1 hour) start. All trails are marked and interconnected. The main loop takes less than 2 hours to complete. There are 64 species of mammals, 39 reptiles and 283 birds. From the viewpoint at 135 m altitude, you can see the canal, forests as far as the eye can see, Cerro Ancón and skyscraper plantations. Sloths and mono-tití watch from the canopy! To see them too, visit the park early in the morning!
