Located 598 km from Bamako, the capital of this region, recognised to be the warmest in Africa (with Djibouti), has seen the nickname «Minute-minute» in West Africa. Indeed, the temperature sometimes reached, in April and May, 50 ° C. The large amount of iron ore, particularly in the hills surrounding the city, would be one of the causes of this high temperature. The main objective of the inhabitants is to leave elsewhere, be it in Mali, Africa or France. Emigration is a tradition in the Sarakolé. It is often said that a Sarakolé was already present on the moon before the arrival of the first American! Kayes, however, kept a certain charm: The visitor can spend a few pleasant days. The population is very warm and it is not difficult to establish links. Since the CAN 2002, Kayes has transformed itself. A number of developments took place there: paved roads saw the day in the heart of the city.
