1. Stroll through the Plateau district

This is one of Senegal's must-sees: the Plateau is one of Dakar's oldest neighborhoods. It's a nerve center where you should take the time to stroll around and admire the colonial architecture, the presidential palace and its gardens, the facades of the ministries and the Place de l'Indépendance. This part of town is also home tothe Cathedral of African Remembrance, sublime with its dome and two towers. Stores and cafés can also be found here. Built on a volcanic hill facing a sunny Ouakam beach, the African Renaissance Monument is an impressive statue in bronze and copper, 52 m high. It depicts a man with bulging muscles carrying a child in one arm and holding a woman by the back with the other. Although the project was widely criticized at the time, the sculpted group was inaugurated in 2010 to mark the fiftieth anniversary of Senegal's independence. Thousands of curious visitors flock to its feet every year to admire the work in all its detail.

3. Discover the Mamelles lighthouse

Mamelles is the name given to the two conical volcanic hills on the Cape Verde peninsula. Built in 1864 on a hilltop by French colonists, the Mamelles lighthouse is a colossus planted on the edge of the Atlantic. Along with the Cape of Good Hope, it is the most powerful lighthouse on the African continent. It's a very pleasant place to visit, particularly for its view over Dakar and the ocean. There's also a museum where you can learn more about the lighthouse's history and operation, anda restaurant where you can sample delicious products from both land and sea.

4. Take a stroll along Dakar's Corniche

Dakar's Corniche is a popular spot for locals and travelers alike. There are beaches, stores, restaurants and hotels all along the way. Dakar's Corniche Ouest has recently been embellished, with areas for walking and resting, playgrounds and vegetation, including several palm trees. At the end of the day, Dakar's residents love to get out and play sports, stroll around as night falls and enjoy the proximity of the sea.

5. Visit the Divinity Mosque

The Mosquée de la Divinité is one of the must-see monuments of Dakar. Located in Ouakam, it was recently built in the 1990s. Its architecture blends African and Arab influences, a gentle mix of local traditions and the beauty of mosques in the Muslim world. The exterior is distinguished by its two minarets and the geometrical motifs adorning the walls, while the interior features beautiful mosaics and murals. The building is also just a stone's throw from the ocean.

6. Strolling through Dakar's markets

Dakar's markets are a must for taking the pulse of the Senegalese capital. There are several in the city. The Kermel market is located in old Dakar, in a historic building dating back to the 19th century. Always full of life, it's renowned for the quality of its produce, including fruit, fish and meat. Another market to discover is Sandaga, a labyrinth of colors, flavors and scents. You'll find everything from fruit and vegetables to street food vendors, handicrafts and objects of all kinds. 7. Strolling the aisles of the Musée Théodore-Monod

The Musée Théodore-Monod is the name given to the former Musée d'Art Africain of the Institut fondamental d'Afrique noire. One of the capital's best places to visit for art and culture lovers. It boasts an extensive collection of art objects from all over West Africa, including sculptures, masks and musical instruments. The temporary exhibition program is also worth keeping a close eye on, with highlights focusing on contemporary Senegalese and international artists.

8. Spend some time at Hann Forest and Zoological Park

The Parc forestier et zoologique de Hann is just 6 km from downtown Dakar. Away from the hustle and bustle of the capital, it's the perfect place to get away from it all for a while and contemplate the many plant species that are emblematic of Senegal. In the zoological section, you can admire many animals typical of African nature, including giraffes, crocodiles, monkeys, zebras, hyenas and lions. A great place for the whole family to recharge their batteries and learn more about the country's biodiversity.

9. Escape to Gorée Island

A visit to Gorée Island is a must when staying in Dakar. Located 3 km off the coast, it is known for its dark past, as it was home to French captiveries used to keep slaves before they were deported. A place of remembrance of colonial slavery in Africa, the Maison des Esclaves is a must-see. As is the Musée historique du Sénégal, dedicated to the history of Senegal from its origins to its independence. On the island of Gorée, stroll through the streets to admire the colorful buildings and pick up a piece of handicraft. A 3 km-long stretch of sand where families love to spend time dipping their feet in the water and playing soccer or other beach sports. It's also a popular spot for water sports enthusiasts, with opportunities for surfing, jet skiing and canoeing. The area also comes alive regularly in the evenings, with campfires and local dances organized by the locals.
