This hilly area with a semi-arid climate is home to one of the continent's most important petroglyph deposits, with nearly 3,000 petroglyphs carved into the rocks over an area of about 6 km2. Their analysis has revealed that the ancient peoples of the region used the site for nearly 8,000 consecutive years, living from fishing, hunting and gathering. The iconography is typical of the cult of the natural elements: the sun, the moon, biological cycles of plants and animals, hunting and scarification instruments.
