Chilapa is located 60 km east of Chilpancingo, on Highway 92, which rises for 15 km along a ridge overlooking a flat valley floor. Waves of clouds rolling in from the Pacific crest the rocky ridges, leaving a thin mist on the road surface. Chilapa is considered the gateway to the Mixtec-Tlapaneca-Nahua zone, home to the mountainous habitat of one of the largest concentrations of indigenous people in Mexico. There are few roads through this territory. Chilapa, as a commercial center and cultural spearhead, plays a vital role in the region's economy.
