185 km from La Paz. Approximately 5,000 inhabitants. Santiago de Pelechuco (formerly called Puyu Cuchu) is a picturesque colonial village nestled in a valley. It was founded by the Spaniards (and in particular religious missionaries of the Augustinian order) in 1560. The entrance to the village, under the gaze of superb queñuas groves, invites to a prolonged stay. A beautiful 16th-century church stands in the main square, surrounded by stone houses. Most of the families in the area make their living from mining, especially gold mining. A destination for those who wish to discover a Bolivia off the tourist routes.
