Between 1502 and 1507 on the order of Nicolas de Ovando to protect the city from pirate attacks, it is the oldest military construction in the New World. She is so reassuring that at the time of the colony, she was called the Fuerza. In its centre, the Torre del En is a massive medieval tower dating back to 1503, high above 18 m. From its peak, the view on the river and the city is superb. The defensive system of the fortress is complemented by a series of forts. During the dictatorship of Trujillo, the fortress served as a prison. In 1937, Trujillo built a castellated rampart surmounted by a tower to separate the fortress from the port of Santo Domingo. This wall, completely incongruous in the decor, is seen very well on the avenue du Port. In the fortress stands the statue of Gonzalo Fernandez de Oviedo. This contemporary columnist in the discovery of the New World wrote in 1533 a general history of India.
