A historic terroir and quality rums: nothing less is needed to make the reputation of this up-and-coming rum distillery.
Located in La Trinité, Baie du Trésor is the name of a bay on the magnificent Caravelle peninsula. Legend has it that a treasure was lost by a Spanish ship in the depths of this bay. Today, this treasure has reappeared in the form of a rum distillery located on the Galion farm: Baie des Trésors. Since 1849, when the farm was acquired by a certain Eugène Eustache, it has supplied sugar cane to the only sugar mill still operating on the island, that of Le Galion. With 750 hectares planted, it is Martinique's leading sugarcane producer.
The idea of creating an agricultural rum was a natural one. Its terroir stretches across the Caravelle peninsula and inland from Trinité to Dufferret. And that's exactly what makes this rum distillery so special: Baie des Trésors produces rhums de terroirs, and only parcel rums, meaning that each one comes from a dedicated parcel of land. The vintages are made from cane grown on the same plots, which have benefited from the same exposure to sun, wind and humidity.
Baie des Trésors does not blend rums from different plots or different harvest years.
Matured for thirteen months in French oak barrels, the "Fruits des Pluies" cuvée is the expression of the cane from the humid plots bordering the Galion river (Quartier de Dufferet): a generous, full-bodied amber rum. "Fleurs du Vent" comes from the dry, trade-wind-fed parcels of Spoutourne, producing an amber rum aged thirteen months in American oak barrels, harmonious and long on the palate.
As for "Plein Soleil", this is a single-crop white rum made exclusively from cane from the Fond Basile dry parcel, a sugar-rich, particularly aromatic rum that stands on its own. Baie des Trésors rums are defined as the purest expression of Martinique's terroir: no sugar, caramel or other inputs are added to let the terroir express itself fully.
Last year, Baie des Trésors released its first old rum, Karakoli, from the Spoutourne parcel, one of the most arid. This year, the range is completed by a new old rum, "Brin d'amour", and Martinique's first amphora-aged agricultural rum, "Brut d'Amphore Bio".
A veritable treasure trove, with more to come!
