GUADELOUPE MUSEUM OF FINE ARTS
Guadeloupe's first Musée des Beaux-Arts opened in 2017, with the aim of introducing the local population to art and exhibiting works.
This is Guadeloupe's first fine arts museum, opened in 2017 by art collector Jérôme Filleau. Its primary vocation is totally educational, to introduce the local population to art. The exhibition features nearly 130 works (paintings, drawings and sculptures) dating from the 16th century to the present day, with an emphasis on artists who were born, practiced or have practiced on the island. A tour of the museum takes in the evolution of art in general, with a particular focus on Guadeloupean artists. You'll discover the great masters of the neoclassical period, such as Guillaume Guillon Lethière, born in Sainte-Anne in 1760, whose works are on show at the Louvre, the French History Museum in Versailles, the Presidential Palace in Haiti and the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. In 2024, an exhibition was dedicated to him at the Louvre, on the initiative of the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown. For the occasion, the Musée de Saint-François loaned the painter's 1791 portrait of Lady Hamilton.
Nineteenth-century artists such as the illustrious Evremond de Bérard, a Saint-Annais and painter of the French school (1824-1881), follow. Contemporary Guadeloupean artists are represented in a beautiful space dedicated to them, with works on loan from fashionable painters and sculptors. Temporary exhibitions are organized from time to time. Some works are available for sale. Guided tours are available at no extra cost (minimum 5 people), booking in advance.
