BOULEVARD DES HÉROS
Located in the heart of the town of Les Abymes, the Boulevard des Héros is an emblematic site dedicated to the memory of historical figures who have marked the history of Guadeloupe, a tribute to Guadeloupe's heritage. This landscaped area pays tribute to the men and women who fought against slavery, for freedom, dignity and justice. The route is dotted with commemorative steles honoring personalities such as the statue of Nelson Mandela, the memorial to the sacrifice of Louis Delgrès, the statue of Joseph Ignace, both heroes of the resistance against Napoleon's reintroduction of slavery in 1802; and the statue of Mulâtresse Solitude, a young pregnant woman of 30 who joined the resistance in 1802. Captured, she was sentenced to death and executed the day after giving birth.
Each monument is part of an initiative to pass on the memory of our heritage to younger generations. The many schools on the boulevard are named after one of these personalities. Designed as a peaceful, educational promenade, the boulevard combines local vegetation, artistic works and explanatory installations. It invites reflection and recognition of the struggle waged by these heroes, known and unknown, who have shaped Guadeloupe's identity. A place of remembrance, learning and pride, the Boulevard des Héros plays a key role in promoting collective memory and reappropriating Creole history in the public space.
