It was only by draining the marshes that the town was able to grow and accommodate an ever-increasing population attracted by its proximity to Pointe-à-Pitre and the Jarry industrial zone. The opening of the airport in 1953 led to real development. It is now the most densely populated city on the island (over 52,000 inhabitants), compared with just 4,400 at the end of the 18th century. Today, the city's expansion is such that its boundaries are difficult to identify, as it is integrated into the natural continuity of Pointe-à-Pitre and extends as far as the Grands Fonds. The city is due to welcome a new university hospital this year.
